Angkor Temple Roots Engulf Stone in Siem Reap Chapel

by Jordyn Rivera

Thick, fibrous tree roots clamp tightly around weathered sandstone blocks inside a chapel structure in Siem Reap. Noon light floods the space through a north-facing window, casting flat, even illumination across the textured surfaces while leaving quiet shadows pooled along the lower walls. Stained glass panels cast patches of deep crimson and cobalt onto the mossy ground, mixing with the natural gray of the stone. The roots, thick as limbs and covered in wet-season green moss, weave through carved reliefs, softening the sharp geometric lines of the architecture. Water droplets rest on the lower stone edges, evidence of the recent heavy rains. The interlocking organic and stone forms create a layered depth that fills the frame from corner to corner.
