Decaying Wooden Synagogue Bimah Monsoon Dawn in beneath a painted synagogue ceiling in Centro Historico, Mexico City

Decaying Wooden Synagogue Bimah Monsoon Dawn

by Adrian Abbott

Cool, pre-dawn light falls through high windows, illuminating dust motes above a weathered wooden bimah. The carved structure shows deep cracks and peeling varnish where the roof leaks, sending thin streams of water onto the polished floor below. Painted motifs on the ceiling curve overhead, their faded blues and ochres visible against the gloom. Water pools reflect the dim glow, creating soft, shimmering patches near the base of the wooden pillars. The low angle emphasizes the height of the space and the precarious balance of the decaying timber against the painted arches. Every surface bears the texture of age, from the rough-hewn beams to the smooth, wet floorboards.
