Fig Roots Split Decaying Greenhouse Hall in inside a stair hall open to the weather in Oregon

Fig Roots Split Decaying Greenhouse Hall

by Jerry Pate

Honeyed evening light falls through the open roof of a ruined greenhouse stair hall, illuminating thick fig roots that split the concrete floor. The roots, rough and dark, twist across the gray pavement where rain has pooled. Warm candlelight glows from a small fixture on the far wall, casting soft, muted reflections on the wet surfaces. Seasonal change is visible in the sparse, yellowing leaves clinging to the vine-covered arches. Dust motes hang in the beams of light, settling on the peeling paint of the metal framework. The scene shows nature slowly reclaiming the structure, with roots pressing against the rusted glass shards embedded in the walls. one drop of water falls from a broken pane, landing in a puddle near the base of the largest root.
