Storm Marker Posts on Levee Path

by Harper Gilmore

Bright midmorning coastal glare strikes hard sideways rain falling across a concrete levee path near Castro. Low-hanging autumn clouds press against the gray sky. Metal storm marker posts stand in rigid rows along the barrier, their surfaces slick with water. The path stretches forward, leading toward a massive concrete structure. An impossible corridor extends visibly farther than the building that contains it, creating a tunnel of gray water and steel that defies the structure's physical limits. Rain streaks blur the distant end of the corridor. The wet concrete reflects the harsh light in sharp, jagged lines. Water droplets rest on the metal edges of the posts. The impossible tunnel ends abruptly where the building wall should be, leaving only a void of falling rain.
