Surreal Pipeline Corridor Rising from Suriname Levee in along a levee path above floodwater in Suriname

Surreal Pipeline Corridor Rising from Suriname Levee

by Marco Sparks

Low to the earth, the concrete edge of a levee path stretches horizontally against a sky heavy with dramatic, darkening clouds. A metal gas pipeline marker stands upright, its surface catching the last golden light of sunset. Beyond the barrier, floodwater mirrors the sky, reflecting the orange glow onto the concrete. An impossible concrete corridor extends vertically from the marker, piercing the clouds and reaching farther than the physical structure should allow. The corridor's smooth, grey walls contrast with the rough, wet grass at the base. Shadows lengthen across the ground as the sun dips below the horizon, illuminating the impossible extension with a cool, twilight hue. The final shadow of the marker falls sharply across the damp soil.
