Surreal Pier Splitting Flood Current

by Luca Best

Rough concrete pier rises from churning brown water, its sharp cutwater dividing the flood current into two violent streams. Midday light defines every jagged edge of the masonry against a sky streaked with light drizzle. The river surface churns with white foam where the stone meets the flow. From the ground looking up, the massive structure looms with civic austerity. Thick gray smoke does not rise but falls downward like heavy liquid, merging with the rain and splashing into the muddy river below. The impossible vapor rests on the wet stone, creating a heavy, inverted curtain that blends with the autumn mist hanging low over the water.
