Storm Drain Outfall Under Sleet Near Istanbul

by Shane Petersen

Concrete storm drain pipes emerge from a steep embankment beneath massive steel transmission towers. Sleet streaks horizontally across the frame, caught in the flat glare of a noon sky. The ground remains damp and gray, with pockets of white fog settling into the lowest depressions near the pipe mouths. The metal lattice of the towers rises vertically, their bolts and cross-bracing sharp against the pale background. Early spring light offers no warmth, only a sterile illumination that highlights the rough texture of the concrete and the wet sheen on the steel. Water trickles silently from the drain, disappearing into the foggy mist below. A thin layer of ice crystals rests on the lower edge of the nearest pipe.
