Storm Drain Filter Stack in Gobi Desert Dawn in beneath a tower crane on open ground in the Gobi Desert

Storm Drain Filter Stack in Gobi Desert Dawn

by Brian Casey

Cold dawn light washes over a stack of storm-drain inlet filters resting on wet concrete beneath a towering construction crane in the Gobi Desert. Mud rests on the base of galvanized steel rings, while fresh spray paint marks contrast against the rusted metal. A heavy chain hangs loosely from the top tier, connecting to a weathered timber beam that angles into the frame. The dry season air leaves the ground cracked and dusty, yet a light drizzle turns the concrete surface slick and reflective. Converging lines from the steel structure and crane legs draw toward a distant vanishing point on the horizon. one drop of water slides down the curved edge of the lowest filter ring, tracing a path through the grime.
