Storm surge barrier towers reflected in peat pools

by Hiroshi Bartlett

Steel lattice transmission towers rise from a dark, waterlogged moor beside a massive concrete storm surge barrier in Tunisia. The sky is a deep, heavy indigo of late autumn blue hour, punctuated by the distant orange glow of a town on the horizon. Steady rain creates a fine, shimmering texture across the black peat pools, distorting the inverted images of the towers into fragmented, vertical streaks. The converging lines of the barrier and the towers pull toward the vanishing point where the water meets the land. Wet concrete surfaces reflect the dim ambient light, showing the civic austerity of the infrastructure against the organic, saturated earth.
