Hawaii Tunnel Portal Icicles Midday Fog in beneath transmission towers in Hawaii

Hawaii Tunnel Portal Icicles Midday Fog

by Kendrick Sellers

Cool season meltwater forms sharp, translucent icicles that drape like glass curtains across the dark rectangular mouth of a concrete tunnel portal. Sunlight reflects off nearby ocean water, bathing the rough stone and smooth ice in a cool, silver sheen. Beneath massive steel transmission towers, a layer of ground fog pools in the low concrete depressions, obscuring the tunnel floor while the upper structure remains crisp against the bright sky. The engineered lines of the opening cut through the soft mist with geometric precision. At the bottom edge, a single droplet hangs from the lowest icicle, catching the reflected light before the frame ends.
