Winter Dawn Transmission Substation Hoarfrost Mist in beneath transmission towers in the Caucasus

Winter Dawn Transmission Substation Hoarfrost Mist

by Walter McKay

Thick white mist swallows the lower ground beneath massive concrete transmission towers in the Caucasus mountains. First light of dawn casts a pale, cool glow along the sharp edges of the substation equipment. Every surface is coated in a thick layer of white hoarfrost that crystallizes the steel latticework and insulators into ghostly, heavy structures. The symmetry of the towers frames the scene, showing monumental scale against the soft, obscuring fog. Concrete bases appear dark and damp where the frost is thinner, against the bright white ice formations clinging to metal bars. The low angle of the sun highlights the texture of the frost on the horizontal crossbeams while the mist fades slightly near the top of the frame. A final layer of ice crystals glistens on the lowest insulator chain.
