Spider Crab Column Migrating on Hokkaido Sea Floor

by Austin Cooke

Reflected sunlight falls through the water column, illuminating a dense procession of spider crabs moving across the rocky seabed. Early autumn light creates a soft, luminous haze where suspended plankton obscure the distant background. The crabs, with their long, spindly legs and mottled brown shells, form a continuous line along the kelp-fringed shelf. Green kelp fronds sway gently above the moving mass, their tips catching the dappled light. A shallow depth of field keeps the foreground crabs in sharp focus while the rear of the column dissolves into the milky blue-green water. at the edge is the distinct shadow of a crab leg falling across a smooth, grey stone.
