Hermit Crab Migration Dawn Sicily Beach in along a game trail in Sicily

Hermit Crab Migration Dawn Sicily Beach

by Bernard Horton

Pale morning light spills across wet sand as a dense river of hermit crabs moves along the shoreline. Low-hanging clouds diffuse the first rays of sunrise, casting a soft, gray glow over the wet ground. The crabs, carrying spiraled shells in hues of ochre, rust, and pale white, crawl over pebbles and damp grains in a continuous, flowing mass. Fine mist rests on the air near the water's edge, where the tide has just receded. Their legs grip the textured sand, creating tiny depressions that fill with seawater. The shells vary in size, from small spiral stones to larger, weathered fragments, all shifting together in the raw motion of the tide. A cluster of shells rests near a shallow puddle, reflecting the muted sky above.
