Hermit Crab Migration Across Hokkaido Beach Road in at the edge of a reed bed in Hokkaido

Hermit Crab Migration Across Hokkaido Beach Road

by Valentino Castaneda

Hard coastal glare illuminates a dense river of hermit crabs crawling over the asphalt of a rural road. The crustaceans, clad in spiraled shells of beige, rust, and slate, move in a continuous stream from the reed bed edge toward the ocean. Tall, dry reeds line the left side, their tips bleached white by the sun. Above, dramatic cumulus clouds stack in the sky, casting sharp, high-contrast shadows across the textured road surface. The crabs cluster tightly, their legs and antennae visible in the bright midmorning light, creating a chaotic yet purposeful texture against the gray pavement. The road stretches diagonally, following the rule of thirds, leading the eye from the reed line into the open coastal space.
