Surreal Dawn Crabs Reflected in Water Floor

by Lee Webster

Deep shadow swallows the lower half of the market stall while a sharp rim light carves the outlines of crabs and lobsters inside glass tanks. The outdoor ground near Japantown has transformed into a mirror-still ocean, perfectly duplicating the tanks and their inhabitants below. Late autumn air leaves the water surface exceptionally clear, disturbed only by slow-moving ripples that stretch across the impossible floor. The crustaceans appear to float in two directions simultaneously, their legs suspended in the real water and their reflections drifting in the floor-ocean. One crab claw touches the boundary where the tank meets the ground, blurring the line between the container and the endless reflected sea.
