Spider Crab Column Near Volcanic Drop Off Naples

by Bryce Michael

Deep shadow swallows the sea floor beside a steep volcanic drop-off near Chiaia, Naples, while a thin rim of pre-dawn light traces the jagged edges of the rock. A dense column of spider crabs migrates across the dark substrate, their spindly legs moving in unison through water thick with suspended particles. The early summer stillness hangs heavy, turning the drifting creatures into weightless silhouettes against the dim backdrop. Fine silt clouds glitter like scattered diamond dust in the faint illumination. The crabs stretch far back into the distance, their forms fading into the murky blue-black depth of the Mediterranean, ending where the rock face dissolves into total darkness.
