Flatback Turtle Hatchling in Kelp Forest in through a forest of kelp fronds in British Columbia

Flatback Turtle Hatchling in Kelp Forest

by Travis Heath

Soft afternoon light falls through the water, illuminating a tiny flatback sea turtle hatchling as it navigates a dense forest of kelp fronds. The water remains exceptionally clear, revealing the intricate textures of the brownish-green kelp blades that sway gently in the slow-moving ripples above. Sunlight creates shifting patterns of brightness on the turtle's smooth, dark shell and flippers. The hatchling moves forward with deliberate grace, its small body contrasting against the towering vertical lines of the kelp. Droplets of water rest on the fronds, catching the light in brief flashes. One ray of sunlight hits the sandy bottom, highlighting the fine grains of sand scattered among the kelp roots.
