Snowmelt Steel Bands on Penstock Bend Above Harare Spillway

by Micah Sexton

Hard midday sunlight strikes the curved steel bands encasing a massive penstock bend, highlighting the wet, rippling sheets of snowmelt clinging to the metal surface. Below, a concrete spillway chute directs a torrent of water, sending fine spray and mist into the air where it hangs suspended against the bright sky. The monsoon season is evident in the heavy saturation of the concrete and the relentless flow of water. Cables run taut along the structure, their shadows cutting sharp lines across the grey stone. White foam churns at the base of the chute, against the dark, wet steel. One rivet on the penstock catches a glint of light, anchoring the industrial scale of the machinery to the raw force of the water.
