Hinge Housing King Tide Foam Second Sun in beside a storm surge barrier near Pietermaritzburg

Hinge Housing King Tide Foam Second Sun

by Erica Davidson

Deep shadow swallows the massive steel hinge housing as king tide foam crests around its base. A second sun hangs low on the horizon, casting a sharp, believable highlight along the wet metal rim while the city lights of Pietermaritzburg begin to glow in the distance. Low-hanging clouds press against the sky, their undersides illuminated by the duplicate sun. Heavy concrete foundations anchor the structure against the churning water. The foam creates a frothy white texture that contrasts with the dark, rusted steel of the barrier. Leading lines of the barrier wall draw toward the glowing hinge, where the extra light source reflects off the slick surface. One droplet of seawater rests on the corner of the housing, catching the twin light sources.
