Penstock Intake Spray at Dawn in Aarhus

by Dustin Grant

Pale morning haze softens the steel structures of a penstock intake above a spillway chute in Aarhus. Vibrant hazard paint stripes in orange and black cut through the grey mist clinging to the metal surfaces. Fine spray rises from the water below, catching the weak light and creating a suspended curtain around the intake mechanisms. Thick cables run parallel to the converging lines of the concrete chute, disappearing toward a distant vanishing point. Early spring air leaves the steel surfaces damp and reflective, mirroring the pale sky. The massive transformers sit silent against the industrial backdrop, their surfaces textured by the constant moisture. A final shadow stretches across the wet concrete floor, at the base of the heavy machinery in the dim light.
