Concrete Pumping Station Under Noon Sky in along a levee path above floodwater in Durban

Concrete Pumping Station Under Noon Sky

by Laurie Hahn

Hard noon light strikes the heavy concrete forms of a pumping station situated along a levee path in Durban. The sky above is a chaotic canvas of dramatic, low-hanging clouds pressing against the flat glare of the summer sun. Thick industrial cables snake across the rough gray surfaces, their black rubber against the pale, heat-washed stone. Below, the floodwater of the harbor basin sits still and dark, mirroring the angular shapes of the machinery. The perspective rises from the ground, making the concrete pillars appear as massive, unyielding monoliths. A shadow falls sharply across the wet pavement, defining the edge where the solid structure meets the liquid water.
