Snappers Swirl Around Shipwreck Mast in Croatian Waters in beside a volcanic drop-off in Croatia

Snappers Swirl Around Shipwreck Mast in Croatian Waters

by Solomon Whitaker

Cold moonlight falls through exceptionally clear late summer water, illuminating a school of snappers swirling around a rusted shipwreck mast. The vessel rests beside a steep volcanic drop-off off the Croatian coast, its corroded iron ribs against the smooth, slow-moving surface ripples above. Layers of depth recede into the distance where the dark slope of the underwater cliff fades into shadow. The fish move in a synchronized, fluid current, their silver scales catching faint beams of light that cut through the deep blue stillness. A faint green algae patch rests on the lower section of the rusted metal, marking the boundary between the ancient wreck and the living ocean.
