Snappers swirl around kelp forest shipwreck mast

by Caleb McBride

Dappled sunlight fractures through dense kelp fronds, illuminating a school of snappers as they circle a rusted shipwreck mast. The forest of brown and green kelp sways gently in the current, creating vertical bars of shadow against the blue water. Tiny suspended particles glitter like dust motes in the beams of light piercing the depths. The metal mast, encrusted with marine growth, rises from the sandy floor, its surface rough and pitted by time. The fish move in a synchronized rhythm, their silver scales reflecting the shifting light. At the base of the mast, a patch of white sand contrasts sharply with the dark, rust-colored iron and the vibrant green of the surrounding kelp.
