Fish Swarm Above Concrete Canal at Dawn in at a canal lock chamber near Havana

Fish Swarm Above Concrete Canal at Dawn

by Matthew Vang

Reeds line the gray concrete edges of a cooling canal lock near Havana under the pale light of dawn. The water surface remains still, reflecting the cool season sky. A school of vibrant tropical fish swims through the air at head height, suspended in perfect formation above the water. Heat shimmer rises from sun-struck concrete surfaces, distorting the air slightly around the floating fish. The composition is strictly symmetrical, showing the civic-scale austerity of the infrastructure. The fish scales catch the low light, creating a sharp contrast against the muted gray stone and green vegetation. One reed tip bends slightly in the invisible air current near the water's edge.
