Tropical Fish Swim Through Sewage Tunnel Night in under a cable-stayed bridge span in Illinois

Tropical Fish Swim Through Sewage Tunnel Night

by Isabelle Kelly

Steel girders of a cable-stayed bridge frame a dark concrete tunnel entrance under a starless winter sky. Low clouds press against the span, reflecting faint ground glow on wet pavement. Inside the structure, harsh work lights cut through the gloom, illuminating heavy pipes and rusted valves. Suspended in the air at head height, a school of bright orange and blue tropical fish swims through the cold, damp atmosphere. Their translucent fins catch the artificial light, creating a stark contrast against the gray industrial concrete. Water droplets hang motionless on the steel beams, while the fish glide silently past the machinery. A reflection of a glowing fish appears on the wet concrete floor beneath the tunnel mouth.
