Frost-Covered Cabbage Furrow With Floating Fish in among orchard ladders and crates in Alabama

Frost-Covered Cabbage Furrow With Floating Fish

by Ian Contreras

Silver frost coats a neat furrow of green cabbage leaves in an Alabama orchard, glistening under the low, pale light of predawn. Mist hovers low over the damp earth, clinging to the rough bark of nearby wooden ladders and the sides of stacked wooden crates. A light drizzle creates a fine sheen on the soil and vegetable surfaces. At head height, a translucent school of vibrant tropical fish swims through the air, their scales reflecting the gray sky. The fish move parallel to the rows of crops, their fins cutting through the cold mist. The leading lines of the furrows draw toward the horizon where the first sun touches the field. at the edge is a single droplet of water sliding down a cabbage leaf, mirroring the floating fish above.
