Silver Sardine School in Clear Cartagena Waters in near Cartagena

Silver Sardine School in Clear Cartagena Waters

by Simon Bell

Sunlight penetrates the wet-season Atlantic to illuminate a dense, swirling mass of sardines near Cartagena. The fish flash silver scales that catch the bright open daylight, creating a shifting mosaic of light and shadow in the exceptionally clear water. Slow-moving surface ripples distort the beam above, casting dancing patterns across the school. The water remains transparent, revealing the depth beneath the suspended school. Individual fish align in perfect unison, their bodies overlapping in a tight, fluid formation. One ray of light hits the side of a sardine, highlighting the curve of its flank against the deep blue backdrop.
