Silver Sardine School Near Mombasa Kelp at Dawn

by Toni Conrad

Soft, diffused dawn light falls through the water column, illuminating a dense school of sardines flashing silver as they turn in unison. The fish cluster tightly against a dark, kelp-fringed shelf, their scales catching the faint glow of the early morning. Suspended particles glitter like scattered diamonds throughout the blue-green water, adding texture to the deep blue background. Thick green kelp fronds sway gently near the rocky edge, framing the silver mass from below and behind. The water remains clear enough to see individual fish bodies while the overall group creates a shimmering, shifting wall. Tiny specks of sediment drift slowly in the current, catching the light just above the school's tail end. The rocky shelf beneath is covered in small, rounded stones and patches of algae.
