Intense noon sunlight penetrates the exceptionally clear water, casting a flat glare that turns a school of juvenile fish into dark, sharp silhouettes. They cluster tightly within the shadowed mouth of a reef crevice beside Stone Town, their forms stark against the luminous blue background. Slow-moving surface ripples hang above, shifting patterns of light that fall across the coral structures below. Cool season clarity reveals every grain of sand and every scale in the high-contrast environment. The deep blue hue of the open water surrounds the dark shapes, defining the stillness of the underwater space. One fish pauses at the edge of the crevice, its outline defined by the bright water beyond.
