First Light on Belize Reef Fish School in beside a reef crevice under clear water near Belize City

First Light on Belize Reef Fish School

by Hudson Foley

Soft overcast light falls through crystal clear Caribbean water, illuminating a vibrant coral reef crevice near Belize City. Hundreds of small fish in hues of electric blue, yellow, and orange hover in a dense, slow-moving school. The coral structure displays rough, porous textures in shades of tan and muted brown, against the smooth, pale surfaces of the reef fish. Shallow depth of field blurs the background into a wash of turquoise, keeping the foreground subjects sharp. Gentle surface ripples create a subtle shimmer across the water column. One ray of diffused sunlight touches the tip of a branching coral formation.
