Juvenile Fish Among Mangrove Roots Cairns in beneath a reef ledge in tropical shallows near Cairns

Juvenile Fish Among Mangrove Roots Cairns

by Tabitha Atkins

Sunlight penetrates the crystal-clear tropical water, illuminating a dense network of gnarled mangrove roots anchored beneath a reef ledge. Hundreds of tiny, translucent reef fish cluster tightly within the root maze, their silver bodies reflecting the soft midmorning glow. The water remains exceptionally still, disturbed only by slow, rhythmic ripples from the surface above. Brownish-gray roots contrast sharply against the vibrant azure backdrop, creating a textured sanctuary. Small bubbles rest on the wood, while the sandy seabed below fades into a deeper blue shadow. A cluster of silver scales catches the light near the central root knot.
