Saltwater Crocodile Basking in Jakarta Sunrise Fog

by Everett Brooks

Golden sunrise rays cut through low morning fog to illuminate the textured, armored back of a massive saltwater crocodile resting near the water's edge. Its jaws hang wide open, revealing rows of sharp teeth and a pink interior, while steam rises faintly from the damp ground. The reptile's rough, olive-green scales catch the first light, against the soft gray mist that obscures the background. Ancient stone structures of Kota Tua fade into the haze behind the animal. A shallow depth of field keeps the focus sharp on the crocodile's snout while blurring the distant urban shoreline. at the edge is a droplet of water clinging to the edge of the lower jaw.
