Nile Crocodile Basking Near Havana Reed Bed

by Tabitha Glover

Copper-toned light washes over the thick, armored scales of a Nile crocodile resting at the water's edge. The reptile's massive jaws hang open, revealing rows of sharp, yellowed teeth and a pinkish tongue against the dark interior. Surrounding the animal, tall reeds sway gently in the cool coastal air, their dried stalks turning shades of brown and gold. The water reflects the fading warmth of the day, creating a shimmering surface that meets the muddy bank. Rough textures of the crocodile's hide contrast with the soft, fibrous reeds. One droplet of water rests on the tip of the lower jaw, catching the last light before the sun dips below the horizon.
