Saltwater Crocodile Entering Water at Dusk in at the edge of a reed bed near Ho Chi Minh City

Saltwater Crocodile Entering Water at Dusk

by Dwight Burgess

Dark water ripples as a massive saltwater crocodile slides from a dense reed bed into the river. The animal's armored, olive-green scales catch a thin rim of fading daylight along its spine, against the deep shadows covering its body. Tall, dry reeds in shades of brown and tan line the bank, indicating the dry season. In the background, a low haze hangs over the horizon where faint city lights begin to glow, suggesting the proximity of Ho Chi Minh City. The reptile's snout breaks the surface tension, creating a sharp wake that spreads outward. One scale on the tail tip reflects the dim ambient light against the dark water.
