Hawaiian Saltwater Crocodile Noon Bask in in Hawaii

Hawaiian Saltwater Crocodile Noon Bask

by Randy Cordova

Thick, armored scales of olive and charcoal dominate the frame, their rough texture catching the harsh, overhead glare of midday sun. The massive reptile lies low, its jaws parted wide to reveal rows of jagged, white teeth and the pink interior of its mouth. Sunlight bleaches the wet sheen on its snout while deep shadows pool within the open cavity. Behind the creature, the background dissolves into a hazy, pale blue horizon where the sky meets distant landforms. Droplets of water rest on the edges of its lower jaw, glistening against the matte skin. The tight framing isolates the animal's raw, elemental form against the washed-out, humid backdrop of the wet season landscape.
