Nile Crocodile Basking in Predawn Moonlight in beside a tidal inlet near Bangkok

Nile Crocodile Basking in Predawn Moonlight

by Colleen Shah

Cold, pale moonlight washes over the rough, slate-gray scales of a Nile crocodile resting beside a tidal inlet near Bangkok. The reptile lies motionless with its massive jaws held wide open, revealing rows of sharp, ivory teeth against the dark interior of its mouth. Shadows pool deeply within the crevices of its armored skin, highlighting the texture of the osteoderms. The surrounding water reflects the dim, starless sky, creating a mirror of deep indigo. In the cool season air, the animal remains perfectly still, a statue of patience. one drop of condensation rests on the edge of the lower jaw, catching the faint silver glow of the moon.
