Salt Crystals on Sanatorium Floor in Light

by Frederick Berry

Pale yellow light falls through heavy, faded curtains to illuminate a long corridor inside a decaying sanatorium. The concrete floor holds a thick layer of white salt crystals migrating from the nearby pan rim. Each crystal forms a distinct geometric shape, catching the low afternoon sun and casting sharp, tiny shadows against the peeling, cream-colored paint on the walls. Dust settles on clean, uncluttered surfaces, preserving the stark contrast between organic salt formations and rigid architecture. No debris litters the path. One salt shard rests precariously on the edge of a cracked baseboard, its facets glinting in the filtered beam.
