Peeling Sanatorium Corridor on Lichen Bark

by Max Richard

White paint flakes peel away from a narrow corridor wall to reveal rough gray plaster beneath, all resting atop a textured surface of green and gray lichen. Tiny string lights hang along the distant ceiling, casting a warm, localized glow that illuminates dust particles in the air. The corridor stretches straight ahead, flanked by doors with faded frames, while deep shadows pool in the corners where the light fails to reach. The lichen-covered ground beneath the architectural fragment mimics the uneven terrain of a tree trunk in Jinja. Each chip of paint creates a small, jagged island against the smooth, decaying surface. One flake hangs suspended by a thin thread of dried adhesive near the bottom edge.
