Cracked Leather Texture on Salt Crystals
by Albert Bates
Deep fissures carve through the worn tan leather of a vintage armchair arm, revealing a rough, fibrous interior beneath the smooth, sun-bleached surface. This weathered curve rests directly upon a jagged bed of white salt crystals lining the rim of a shallow pan. Late afternoon light streams from a northern window, casting long, soft shadows that accentuate the depth of every crack and the sharp, geometric edges of the salt. The autumn sun warms the leather's ochre tones while leaving the salt in cool, bright highlights. A fine layer of dust settles in the deepest crevices of the hide, against the crystalline grit surrounding the chair's base. The shallow focus blurs the background, keeping attention on the tactile interplay between the soft, decaying material and the hard, mineral crust.
