Dappled Light on Cracked Salt Pans Under Stone Arch in beneath a broken stone arch in Namibia

Dappled Light on Cracked Salt Pans Under Stone Arch

by Eleanor Hewitt

Late afternoon light falls through scattered leaves, casting shifting patches of brightness across the fractured interior of a broken stone arch in Namibia. Dried salt evaporation pans lie beneath the masonry, their surfaces split by deep, jagged fissures that reveal dry earth in shades of pale ochre and dusty gray. A fine sheen coats the rough stone textures and glistens on nearby vegetation, evidence of recent rain in the humid air. Layers of depth recede from the immediate foreground of shattered pans into the shadowed distance of the archway. Geometric patterns of the cracks contrast with the organic irregularity of the surrounding foliage. A specific shard of white salt crust rests on the edge of a lower pan, catching the late afternoon light.
