Peeling Paint Layers on Salt Crystals Santa Cruz

by Vanessa Boyd

Translucent light penetrates the flaking edges of white paint, exposing rougher underlayers of gray and ochre against a bed of jagged salt crystals. The noon sun casts a flat, even glare that turns the crystalline rim into a field of scattered diamonds. Polished salt surfaces catch tiny, sharp highlights while the peeling paint creates a textured topography of raised ridges and deep fissures. Negative space surrounds the central cluster, showing the microscopic scale of the decay. Fine dust settles in the cracks between the crystalline shards, against the smooth, glassy faces of the larger salt formations that frame the decaying coating.
