Mossy Sloth by Tidal Inlet at Dawn in beside a tidal inlet in North Dakota

Mossy Sloth by Tidal Inlet at Dawn

by Athena Bender

Thick green moss blankets the fur of a three-toed sloth resting against a moss-draped branch. The animal sits in patient stillness beside a narrow tidal inlet where muddy water reflects the pale gray sky. Low mist hangs just above the wet ground, softening the edges of distant reeds and fallen logs. The light is diffused and cool, casting no sharp shadows across the damp earth. Overhead, the sky remains perfectly clear of clouds, against the heavy moisture clinging to the vegetation. The sloth's dark eyes remain fixed forward, its claws gripping the wood with unyielding tension. Patches of wet mud surround the base of the tree, glistening under the soft morning glow.
