Midnight Puffball Spore Release in Manitoba Terraced Garden

by Philip Tyler

Deep shadow swallows the lower terraced garden plots of a Manitoba midsummer landscape, where low-hanging clouds press heavy against the sky. One puffball mushroom stands at eye level, its pale, spherical cap sharply defined by a thin rim of electric light cutting through the darkness. The fungus releases a dense, swirling cloud of fine spores that glow faintly against the black background, creating a visible burst of texture. Surrounding the mushroom, dark green leaves of garden crops rest in the gloom, their edges barely visible. The spore cloud expands outward in a turbulent sphere, catching the rim light to reveal individual particles suspended in the still air. The ground beneath is damp earth, dark and heavy, holding the mushroom steady against the night.
