Blue Hour Amanita Staircase in Inner Mongolia

by Natalie Osborne

Cool blue twilight washes over terraced garden plots in Inner Mongolia, where a cluster of deadly white amanitas stands stark against the darkening earth. Heat haze shimmers above the soil, distorting the air yet leaving the fungal caps and gills in sharp, tactile focus. An impossible stone staircase rises from the base of the mushrooms, but its upper landing splits into two directions: one path climbs steeply toward the fading sky, while another identical path descends into the same soil from which it emerges. The terraced beds curve around the impossible geometry, their dark furrows against the pale caps. The light catches the wet rim of a mushroom cap, highlighting one drop of dew that defies the rising heat.
