Silhouetted Amanita Mushrooms in Pine Forest

by Gail Lee

Honeyed evening light floods a clearing near Bingerville, casting the cluster of deadly amanitas into stark black silhouettes against a brightening sky. The dry season leaves the pine needles on the forest floor brittle and golden, against the smooth, rounded caps of the fungi. After a storm, the air holds a heavy stillness, and the wet earth glistens faintly beneath the mushrooms. Tall pine trunks rise vertically on either side, framing the delicate, ghostly shapes of the toadstools. The backlighting strips away all color, leaving only the sharp outlines of the gills and stems against the pale, clearing horizon. A thin layer of rainwater beads on the edge of the nearest cap, catching the last glow of the sun.
