Mushroom Umbrellas in Misty Dawn Meadow

by Hana Bell

Thick gray mist rests on the ground in early spring, obscuring the lower stems of a dense oleander hedge lining a narrow lane near Pristina. Deep shadows dominate the foreground while a sharp rim of pale dawn light outlines the waxy green leaves. Among the ordinary gravel and wild grass, oversized mushroom caps rise like open umbrellas, their gills visible in the low angle. The massive fungi cast long, soft shadows that stretch across the damp earth, anchoring the impossible scale to the concrete reality of the lane. One droplet of dew rests on the edge of the nearest cap, catching the faint light.
