Hippo Surfacing Tidal Inlet Madagascar Evening

by Don Melendez

Pale gray skin breaks the dark surface of a tidal inlet as a hippopotamus rises during the final blue light of evening. Monsoon fog hangs low over the water, softening the edges of the massive, wet body. Reflected light from the sky glides across the slick hide, highlighting deep creases and the powerful curve of the back. The animal's eyes and nostrils emerge above the waterline, cutting through the mist. Low-angle perspective emphasizes the sheer scale of the creature against the hazy horizon. A ripple of disturbed water spreads outward from the snout, catching the fading twilight.
