Hippo Yawning at Sunset in Dar es Salaam Lake in beside a tidal inlet near Dar es Salaam

Hippo Yawning at Sunset in Dar es Salaam Lake

by Blake Yang

Golden firelight washes the dark water of a tidal inlet near Dar es Salaam, illuminating the massive, wet skin of a hippopotamus breaking the surface. The animal tilts its head back, mouth wide open to reveal pink gums and large ivory tusks against the clear blue sky. Dry season dust settles on the distant shoreline where sparse vegetation meets the water. The sun hangs low, casting long, sharp reflections across the ripples surrounding the creature. Heavy folds of gray hide glisten with moisture, against the warm orange glow of the setting sun. One ripple expands outward from the hippo's jaw as it closes its mouth slightly.
