Hippo Surfacing Glacial Stream Morning Jakarta
by Micah Kramer
Wet brown skin breaks the surface of a narrow, fast-moving glacial stream near Glodok, Jakarta. The hippopotamus rises with heavy, muscular shoulders visible above the churning white water. First rays of sunrise paint the mist rising from the wet stones in soft gold and pale blue. Droplets rest on the animal's hide, catching the light against the grey morning sky. The water flows rapidly around the massive form, creating sharp ripples that distort the reflection of the early sun. Behind the animal, damp concrete embankments and scattered tropical vegetation line the stream banks. The wet pavement glistens under the weak morning light, showing the aftermath of recent rain. One drop slides from the hippo's ear onto the dark, slick rock below.
