Rhinoceros in Mud Near Southampton Tidal Inlet

by Khalil Lee

Cold silver dawn light washes over a thick-skinned rhinoceros standing knee-deep in dark, churned mud beside a tidal inlet. The animal faces away, its massive form silhouetted against the pale, overcast sky of early winter. Gray clouds hang low, pressing down on the wet shoreline where the water meets the earth. Patches of frost rest on the sparse, brown winter grasses along the bank. The rhino's hide appears rough and textured, glistening slightly with moisture from the mud. Its ears are pricked forward, suggesting alertness. One droplet of water drips from the creature's lowered ear onto the slick surface below, merging with the gray slush.
